Don』t work in private hospitals if you cannot accept dress codes, medical association tells healthcare staff
BY YAP TZU GING
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 6 ― Healthcare workers who feel they cannot accept the dress code imposed by private hospitals should not work there, the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has said after a Muslim nurse was sacked for refusing to wear short-sleeved uniform.
MMA president Dr Ashok Zachariah Philip said that private hospitals should be able to come up with their own dress codes without interference.
"A private hospital should be allowed to draw up their own dress codes, so long as they do not contravene any law.

「All employees should be informed about the dress code. If they feel they cannot accept it they should not accept the job," he told Malay Mail Online via email.
He added that if dress codes are imposed, they should be based on science and patient's well-being instead on religion.
"Any dress code in hospitals must be based on scientific evidence. If there is evidence that long sleeved tunics spread infection from patient to patient, we must see how this can be overcome," Dr Philip added.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said his ministry has already enforced some guidelines for Muslim nurses in government hospitals.
"We have already enforced some for the Muslim nurses in government hospitals like the headgear and which area they can wear short sleeves. Private hospitals can enforce their own guidelines," he told Malay Mail Online via phone.
On Friday National news agency Bernama reported that Naziah Sauni Samat was threatened with sacking after she refused to wear a short-sleeved uniform.
Online news portal Malaysiakini then reported the hospital's reply to the issue, with its finance and administration manager saying that the nurse's sacking was due to a disciplinary issue.
Damai Service Hospital's Regina Sundram was quoted as saying that their dress code was set since 1998 and added that short sleeves "prevent bacterial infection".

No disciplinary trouble, says nurse embroiled in uniform row
BY HASBULLAH AWANG CHIK
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 6 ― A nurse who was sacked by the Damai Service Hospital recently denied that a disciplinary problem led to her termination, insisting that she was absent from work simply because she was chased out.
The nurse, Naziah Sauni Samat, 24, said the hospital had prevented her from working after she complained about the hospital’s dress code that required her to wear a short-sleeve uniform.
「I did not come to work because they themselves did not allow me to come. I have recordings proving that they claimed I will be made a puppet if I return to work,」 Naziah told ProjekMMO yesterday.
「I came to work, [and] they told me to leave. When I arrived with long sleeves, they told me to just sit at the side, to not do any work until I wear short sleeves with gloves.」
Yesterday, the hospital’s finance and administration manager Regina Sundram told news portal Malaysiakini that Naziah did not come to work for two days consecutively without providing any reason for her absence.
「She was not sacked for wearing a long-sleeved uniform … She did not tell the administration that she would be absent. As such, we consider her services as being automatically terminated,」 Regina explained, citing the Employment Act 1955.
On Friday, the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) had urged the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and the Health Ministry to issue guidelines on uniform for Muslim nurses at government and private hospitals.
PPIM’s chief activist Datuk Nadzim Johan said it had received 20 complaints this year on discrimination against Muslim nurses, including Naziah’s complaint.
Naziah, who has a Diploma in Nursing, worked at a clinic before joining the hospital on September 1 this year, upon her return from Japan where she worked as a personal nurse for more than a year.
Naziah said she had lodged a report at the Taman Melawati police station on the mistreatment by the hospital last November 24.
