NAJIB LOSES CONTROL OF UMNO SUPREME COUNCIL? Despite Zahid, Rosmah 'moving aggressively', sack Muhyiddin plan may FAIL
KUALA LUMPUR - Concerns about another major shakeup in Prime Minister Najib Razak's Umno party is rocking Malaysia, with investors selling down the Ringgit to below the 4.30 psychological mark against the U.S. dollar, and citizens bracing for more prolonged political uncertainty.
"Nobody know what will be agreed or disagreed at the Umno political bureau meeting this morning. It appears to be an emergency session to talk terms ahead of the September 9 supreme council meeting. If they cannot agree, then there is fear Najib will sack Muhyiddin Yassin, Shafie Apdal and Mahathir's son Muhkriz. If that happens there will be great instability, so you can't blame investors for running off," an Umno watcher told Malaysia Chronicle.
Najib, embroiled in a massive RM42 billion corruption scandal involving his prized 1MDB investment fund, had summoned the Umno's political bureau to a meeting at his office this morning.
According to The Malaysian Insider, the invitation letters, signed by secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, have been issued. The meeting was due to be held at 9.30am.
Meanwhile, according to Malaysiakini, Muhyiddin and Shafie who are also members of the political bureau will be attending. Muhyiddin is the Umno deputy president and Shaife, one of the party's 3 vice-presidents.
Both men were sacked from their Cabinet posts by Najib in June.
Muhyiddin lost the Deputy Prime Minister's post to Zahid Hamidi, who now also holds the Home Minister's portfolio, while Shaife Apdal was the former Rural minister.
Muhyiddin and Shafie are said to be on a list of 7 Umno bigwigs that Najib is pushing to sack from Umno in a bid to consolidate his hold on power. The 7 include Kedah chief minister Muhkhriz Mahathir, former Terengganu chief minister Ahmad Said and Perak women's leader Hamidah Othman.
Zahid and Rosmah 'moving very aggressively'
Invite leaked to the media
While Muhyiddin and Shafie were elected to their posts, Umno watchers are betting that Najib will use the 'discipline card' to push for their ouster.
"Everyone is Umno knows why Najib wants Muhyiddin out. Sacking him as DPM is not enough. The grassroots are angry and Muhyiddin and his supporters can create a groundswell that will sooner or later end in Najib being kicked out. Already there are calls to reinstate the Umno polls and police reports are being lodged over Najibs alleged corruption in 1MDB and his RM2.6 bil donation," a political source told Malaysia Chronicle.
"The question is - can Najib really do it? You can see some of the supreme council members like Nazri Aziz, Shahrizat Jalil and even Najib's own cousin Hishammuddin Hussein advising Najib not to stir up more instability in Umno with a new round of sackings."
"But there are other hands besides Najib. Just last night the former deputy director of the Special Branch mentioned the names of Najib's wife Rosmah Mansor and Zahid Hamidi at meeting 2 nights before Muhyiddin as sacked as DPM and Gani Patail removed as Attorney General.
"Many critics believe these two - Zahid and Rosmah - will have their way in persuading Najib to sack Muhyiddin even if it destabilizes Umno and the nation. For Rosmah - her megalomania is well known. It's hard to imagine her being willing to let go of so much power and position."
"As for Zahid, he is moving very aggressively - touring Umno divisions the past few weeks. He is now the prime mover, he dictates Najib's pace. Many of the top people in Umno privately believe, if Zahid has his way, Muhyiddin is history. But Rosmah should be careful. Once Zahid is sure of the deputy prime minister's chair, he will go after Najib's post. That's the reality of politics."
If Najib fails to oust Muhyiddin, it will be a signal for his foes to CHARGE
Zahid, Rosman and Najib at Mecca earlier this year, where it is believed the plan to sack Muhyiddin, Shafie and Attorney General Gani Patail was sealed.
Be that as it may, some in Umno are doubtful Najib can summon enough ballast to push out Muhyiddin, who has the support of the power Johor Palace as well as Johore state Umno.
"All eyes are on Najib. If he cannot do it - that's the end of him. The vultures will come and pick at his 'political corpse'. It will be the signal for the factions led by Dr Mahathir and Muhyiddin to charge," said the political source.
Neither Muhyiddin nor Shafie were invited to an earlier supreme council meeting on September 1, which was also held at the PM's office. Only a few supreme council members close to Najib attended the September 1 meeting, reported The Malaysian Insider.
Tongues are wagging over Muhyiddin's failure to call for a management meeting ahead of the September 9 supreme council meet. It is customary for the party No. 2 to chair the management meeting before the main pow-wow.
Some take it as a sign Najib was determined to push out Muhyiddin, and calling this morning's political bureau meet to thwart his former deputy's stone-walling.
Others see it as a sign that Najib was creating an excuse to cover his failure to drum up enough support to sack the duo.
"Suddenly Najib calls this political bureau meeting and news is leaked out to the media. To me, it smells very fishy and whether it is Najib trying to cover up his failure to get rid of Muhyiddin or not, the facts remains. If Muhyiddin stays on - Najib's so-called influence is gone and it's just a matter of time before he is forced to resign. For Zahid, he will be disappointed but it won't stop him from trying again."
