KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — Malaysia’s federal religious authorities confirmed today that local restaurant chain Secret Recipe has lost its halal certification, but said it was because it had violated its cleanliness guidelines and was not due to haram (forbidden) ingredients in its food products.
According to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia’s (Jakim) Halal Hub Department, the certification was revoked since the chain violated the Malaysian Halal Certification Procedure Manual in cleanliness and good manufacturing practices.
「This revocation however was not caused by the use of haram ingredients in processing its products,」 the department’s director Hakimah Mohd Yusoff said in a statement posted on the department’s official Facebook page.
The department said it has summoned the company, which has pledged to rectify the matter.
It said the certificate was revoked on May 7, 2015, but Secret Recipe can apply for a new certification as long as it adheres to the standards.
「Jakim would also like to advise consumers to not make various assumptions and inaccurately spread the issue,」 Hakimah said.
Questions over the halal status of food in Malaysia cropped up in May last year when more than 20 Malay-Muslim groups called for a nationwide boycott on all Cadbury products over the discovery of porcine DNA in a sample of its chocolates.
Jakim has since declared that the two batches of Cadbury chocolate products previously found tainted with porcine DNA are halal and safe for Muslim consumption.
