KUCHING: Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) Baru has confirmed four candidates thus far who will contest in Bukit Semuja, Kedup and Balai Ringin, apart from Opar that was announced on Wednesday.
According to a source close to the party, PBDS Baru had identified candidates in 10 Dayak-majority seats and was currently finalising the details. Pakan, Meluan and Mulu were among constituencies the party was looking to field candidates in the upcoming state election.
「PBDS Baru is in the midst of finalising its candidates who are mainly professionals. Discussions are also on-going with other members keen to contest under the PBDS Baru ticket. Among the constituencies where talks have been positive include Pakan, Meluan and Mulu,」 the source, who is also one of the party’s proponents, told The Borneo Post yesterday.
Seasoned campaigner Cobbold John Lusoi, who is also the party’s supreme council member, is expected to contest in Bukit Semuja. He was spotted at the Election Commission (EC) office yesterday to make a RM5,000 election deposit. The 53-year-old Master of Business Administration graduate from Huntsville, Texas, has participated in five elections since 2001.
Cobbold first contested in Kedup before shifting to Balai Ringin in 2006 and 2011. In the parliamentary elections, he contested twice in Sri Aman (2003 and 2008).
Human rights activist Mark Murau Sumon will represent the party in Kedup. Hailing from Kampung Pichin, Serian, the Business Administration graduate is the former state PKR Youth deputy chief. Murau is currently a central executive committee member with Sarawak Heritage Society.
Entrepreneur Pok Ungkut, a former member of People’s Alliance for the Justice of Peace (Peace Party), will represent PBDS Baru in Balai Ringin.
At a press conference here two days ago, PBDS Baru announced that deputy president Patrick Anek Uren would contest in Opar.
Anek was a three-term Mas Gading MP from 1974 to 1986. The 68-year-old lawyer was also Tasik Biru assemblyman from 1979 to 1983 and has served as parliamentary secretary in the Social Welfare Ministry from 1974 to 1979 during his time with the now defunct Sarawak National Party (SNAP).
PBDS Baru president Louis Jarau, at the same media conference, said the party was looking to contest in 10 Dayak-majority seats in the upcoming polls. He said the party was in the process of finalising its candidates and the list would be known on nomination day on April 25.
Jarau added that he would not be the party’s candidate in this election, though a campaign had gone viral in the social media for him to contest in Dudong.
On April 14, Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah announced that they have approved an application by PBDS Baru to use its own symbol in the 11th state election to be held on May 7.
The Registrar of Societies (ROS) has approved the registration of PBDS Baru on Aug 28, 2013.
