Five varsity students fall into ravine – due to selfie

April 21, 2016

Firemen summoned to rescue them from 24-metre-deep ravine near Kuala Besut, Terengganu.

PETALING JAYA: Their wish to take a better selfie caused five university students to fall into a 24-metre-deep ravine at Keluang Hill in Kuala Besut, Terengganu, on Wednesday.

None of them were badly hurt in the incident, reported Star Online.

The five, all from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), were on a hiking trip with 20 other students when they stopped for some selfies.

Besut Fire and Rescue Department Chief Mohd Zailani Abdullah said they received a call from a member of the public at 1.15pm and five firemen from the Kampung Raja fire stations rushed over to the scene.

Until this evening, two of the students, a male and a female, had been successfully brought up.

The department is still trying to hoist up the remaining three students.

Star Online said selfie-related accidents were on the rise, with 27 people dying from such incidents around the world last year.
