Sarawak polls: SUPP disgruntled over direct Barisan candidates
KUCHING: SUPP has finally spoken up about losing seats to incumbents linked to breakaway party UPP. In a statement Wednesday afternoon, SUPP president Senator Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian (pic)claimed decisions on candidacies were forced upon the party.
"While we do not agree with the concept of Barisan direct candidates, we have been overruled by the Chief Minister. We are disappointed at the allocation of the seats to Barisan direct candidates," said Sim.
He added the party was "especially" disappointed to lose Pujut to a UPP linked candidate, who was not an incumbent of the seat.
"But we are cognisant that it is his (the Chief Minister) prerogative."
He urged party members to remained united, "in order to remain a force to be reckoned with" and to prepare "for the longer-term fight".
"We have unseen forces intent on destroying SUPP -- both from within and outside," Sim said without elaborating.
The statement concluded with a plea for the elections to be about Sarawak's autonomy, and for Sarawakians to put differences aside.
"Now is the time for us to pool our efforts together and focus on denying peninsula Malaysia on making further inroads into Sarawak. This state elections is about state issues and not federal issues."
