Marvel Studios has big plans after Avengers: Endgame, but the studio does not want to tell you what they are. Despite the lack of official announcements, it’s clear at this point that Marvel will release Black Widow and The Eternals in May and November of next year, respectively.
The Eternals, which is being directed by Chloé Zhao, will continue the Marvel Studios tradition of introducing audiences to characters they』ve never seen and may have never even heard of before. It will introduce audiences to several characters, according to studio boss Kevin Feige, who confirmed The Eternals will be an ensemble picture.
「Eternals are one group,」 Feige told Collider. 「But we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like [Guardians of the Galaxy], not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people.」
The Eternals have been an ensemble in the comics, so it’s not that surprising that the movie franchise will follow suit. There were, however, reports that the film might focus more on Sersi, an Eternal who became an Avenger in the source material. That information may never have been accurate, but even if it was, stories evolve and it now sounds like Sersi will be sharing the spotlight.
Jack Kirby created The Eternals and introduced them in their own comic, which debuted in 1976. It was a fascinating story that stretched across human history (and even before). It is the massive scale of Kirby’s original stories that helped inspire Marvel Studios to make this film in the first place.
「Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years,」 Feige said. 「And that’s also something we haven』t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.」
The Eternals is (unofficially) scheduled for release on November 6, 2020.
