Having a baby can put a lot of stress on a woman's body and psyche. The anticipation, the growth of the baby in your tummy, the plans, the labor and transition back home. Here are some practical steps of how to adjust to new motherhood.

Steps

1

Try to keep a good support system around you. Your husband, mom, a neighbor or friend can be helpful in everyday chores while you are adjusting to your new baby.

2

Keep yourself hydrated and good protein and vitamins if you are breastfeeding. This can put a toll on your body as your baby feeds. You may feel worn out, but there are ways to keep your energy up, such as protein shakes or bars, fish, eggs, or milk products.

3

Try to read your child's cries. Is he/she hungry, dirty, tired, in pain, or bored. If one solution doesn't work, try another one. It will be an adjustment for both of you.

4

Be patient. The first few weeks and months are a big transition to the new norm in all of your lives. There are many others going through a similar situation as you.

5

Go to church, or read the Bible. Being close to God will help in your spiritual life and He will give you strength.

6

Plan times to be around others. You may feel alone in your own world of diapers, cries, feedings, etc. Take a few moments to be with a friend or your spouse.

7

Get exercise. You may not feel like getting out or getting your body back in shape. Stretches, walking, swimming, little by little, can help you feel better about yourself.

8

Spend time with your baby. Even though it seems as if every waking moment is soothing a cry or doing some chore, your baby needs bonding time with you. Read the baby a nursery rhyme, play pat-a-cake, or gently stroke his/her skin. Most babies love touch and need to be nurtured.

9

Do something you like. A fun movie, a new plant in your garden, write a letter, or go out to dinner. It's your personal preference.
