How to Buy a Nursing Bra
Bras are the basis for everything else we put on our torsos. We wear strapless, racerback, halter and cross back bra styles in addition to the regular shoulder strap variety. They allow us to wear our complete wardrobe without worry that our undergarments will be revealed. Motherhood brings a whole new set of challenges into the equation. Bras for nursing moms need to still be functional for our fashion while also functioning for our convenience needs of caring for an infant.
1. Find a trained professional to measure you to determine the correct bra size.
Measuring yourself can get you close to the correct measurements, but as you move to do the measuring, you could shift making the measurements not quite accurate.
Measure, with the professional's help, around your ribcage just below your bust and also measure the fullest part of your bust. The ribcage measurement, rounded up to the nearest even number, will be the band size. Subtract the band size from the measurement of the fullest part of the bust to determine the cup size.
2. Choose a few styles of nursing bras in the size you've determined, and try them on for fit and comfort.
It may be that different brands fit in different ways, so you may actually need a larger or smaller size.
3. Undo the cup flap with 1 hand while each nursing bra is on, and then do the cup flap back up again still with 1 hand.
This is important because when preparing to nurse, mothers often have many things occupying their hands so a bra that will offer the convenience of 1-handed operation can be helpful.
4. Ensure that there is room in the cups of the bra style or styles that you choose for nursing pads to fit inside comfortably.
These may be necessary while you are nursing to keep your clothing dry, and you want to be sure that you have the option before you make a purchase.
5. Check in the mirror in the dressing room that there is no excess breast tissue protruding from the bra style you are trying.
You also want to check for bra straps that are biting into shoulders and a band that is riding up your back. These are all signs that the bra is not a good fit and that a different size or style should be tried.
6. Purchase at least 3 nursing bras, whether they are the same style or different styles, because it is helpful to be able to wear 1 while washing 1 and have 1 in reserve.
tips::
You should wait until just before the baby is born, or just after, to be fitted for nursing bras. Your body continues to change throughout the pregnancy process and will change again postpartum. There is a chance that you will need to buy a different size of nursing bra as time goes on and you begin to lose the pregnancy weight, but your best fit will be found just before or after the baby is born. While nursing, your breasts are never stand still as they fill with milk and shrink after feeding. Look for a bra with at the very least 5% spandex to match these changes. A lactation specialist can help you find the right nursing bra for you. It is his or her job to be current on research and trends impacting breastfeeding, so knowing about the best and most comfortable nursing bras available should be well within the specialist's expertise. A nursing bra that fits properly will not cause pinching within the arm or involving the breasts and will not ride up within the back or put tension for the shoulders.
