南海局勢又添新的緊張因素：美國國防部官員向路透社透露，美國一艘水下無人探測載具（UUV，unmanned underwater vehicle），15日在菲律賓蘇比克灣西北方約50浬的國際水域作業時，遭到一艘中國海軍艦艇扣留。美方已經向中方發出正式外交照會，要求返還。官員也表示，類似事件是首度發生。

這艘無人測量載具的母艦是美國海軍的「波第契」號（USNS Bowditch，T-AGS 62），本艦是一艘海洋測量艦，排水量4260噸，1996年服役。波第契號與許多後勤艦艇一樣，屬於軍事海運司令部（Military Sealift Command），船上沒有武裝，半數船員是平民並非軍職。因此舷號前加了字母T，船名字首也用USNS（United States Naval Ship）而非一般作戰艦的USS（United States Ship）。

這次被扣的無人探測載具的外型類似一架滑翔機，使用時半浮在水中，用以蒐集水文資料，以利海圖與水下模型的製作，並不算是機密性的探測儀器。美方官員指出，中國「南救510號」艦始終如影隨形跟蹤波第契號，並且派出小船，將無人載具撈起帶走。

The United States has lodged a formal complaint with China after the Chinese seized an underwater drone operating beneath a US ship, which the Americans say was being used simply for oceanographic work.

The USNS Bowditch was sailing in international waters on Thursday, off the coast of the Philippines, when the incident took place. The research ship is owned by the US Navy but operated by Military Sealift Command, with a crew of contracted civilian mariners and scientists.

The American ship had stopped in the water to pick up two underwater drones. As it came to a halt, a Chinese naval ship that had been shadowing the Bowditch put a small boat into the water. That small boat came up alongside and the Chinese crew took one of the drones.
