5 Hardest Heroes to Play in Dota 2
When you jump into Dota 2 for the first time, or even the 100th, you may be overwhelmed by the amount of characters you can pick from. Some are easier than others, most can be figured out after a game or two, but there are a select few we suggest you avoid until you have a firm grasp of the game and all its mechanics. Those 5 are listed below along with the reasons you should avoid them.
5 - Io
Io, commonly referred to as Wisp, is a strange character and this puts the celestial being in slot number five. Io is a strength hero, but also a support who must remained linked to allies to apply bonuses to them, as well as teleport them around the map.
Even during character selection Io can be a pain as their skills don't mesh well with all characters, making character selection important if you wish to utilize Io. During the game you will also encounter many hurdles that prevent this character from being easy to grasp. Knowing when to Relocate or Tether can be tough, and without proper team communication, your effect in battle will be heavily mitigated. Io is the most hardcore of supports, but should be left for a time when you have mastered all the others.
4 - Earth Spirit
One of the newer additions to the roster is also one of the hardest. He is a strength carry, but everything relies on positioning. Certainly you can say this about many characters, but Earth Spirit takes it to another level.
Utilizing large Stone Remnants, all of his abilities use these to stun, slow or otherwise annoy the enemy. Misplace your Remnant and you will severely hamper your potential damage. This is what causes him to have such a high learning curve, as you must learn when and where to use the Remnants or else you are stuck, walking around right clicking everything, which is not Earth Spirits specialty.
3 - Chen
Any character that has more than one unit to control can be an issue to play for new players. Chen is all about having creatures with him, making him complicated to learn and play. Chen is an intelligence support who spends most of their time in the jungle. His ability to control the creatures you find there can make him quite powerful, if you know who to control. This is one of the many hurdles you must overcome as you learn Chen. Each creature he can control has a use, but for different things and times in the game. While jungling you may use a wolf for his damage, but you need a centaur for team fights or a bird to kill stacked creep camps.
Tack all that on to the fact Chen can die very quickly due to his low health pool and you have a very tough character to use. As we mentioned, he is also a jungler, a role that can be more difficult to learn as you have to know which creep camps to attack at what time, how to stack and clear out large groups, all while not getting jumped by the enemy. If micromanaging several units isn't your thing, give Chen a wide berth and pick another support to learn!
2 - Invoker
A lot of players know Invoker. He is a popular character, whether for new players or professionals, and for this reason he has a lot of exposure, which might entice brand new players. However, new players should stay very far away from Invoker. The reason? He has a particular set of skills, that when utilized, allows him to conjure up a huge number of spells.
His primary skills Quas, Wex and Exort are used to Invoke new skills for him. With all these skills combined, Invoker has a total of 14 skills. A character with 4-5 skills is daunting for a new player, 14 is just mind boggling. On top of that, you have to remember what combination of Quas, Wex and Exort equal another skill, and then you must pull off these quick transitions on the fly so that you can switch Invoked skills during battle. Invoker is a great fighter, amazing at initiating fights and can harass your enemy until they simply want to give up, but when learning characters, leave him until the end as his power is extremely hard to control.
1 - Meepo
Poof! In comes the hardest character in Dota 2. Although a strong argument could be made for other heroes to be in the number one slot, Meepo just seems perfect in this slot. When you first begin playing Dota 2, controlling just one character can be tough. Maybe though, you've played Chaos Knight or Phantom Lancer, and don't have an issue working with a few clones. Well Meepo takes it all a steep further, by forcing you to deal with four, or even five Meepos, who aren't clones that disappear after a few seconds.
Meepo is one of the most interesting and well known characters in Dota 2 due to his unique skills. He is an agility carry, who , upon reaching certain levels, replicates himself. This is not a temporary effect like Chaos Knight or other heroes. No, this is permanent. Each time you level up your ultimate ability, a new Meepo appears. He functions the exact same way as the primary Meepo, although the clones can't carry items.
This is where the chaos begins. Controlling four, or even five Meepos can be a real struggle. The worst part? If one Meepo dies, they all die making him a huge risk / reward character to play. In the right hands, he can win games all on his own. In the wrong hands, he is a constant source of kills for your enemy. Top this all off with a slow firing net ability that can be hard to land, and a Poof skill that takes time to charge up and you have the hardest character to play in Dota 2.
