Dota 2: 10 Most Fun Heroes You Must Play As
10. Timbersaw
This tree-hating schizophrenic goblin provides laughs and plenty of frowns from the other team as he is capable of escaping certain death time and again. Timbersaw is a great hero that is rarely at a disadvantage. His ultimate ability, Chakram, provides great area of effect damage and a brutal slow effect for anyone caught in the blade’s way. Whirling Death and Reactive Armor work great when you』re caught in the middle of a hectic team fight.
Then there’s the skill that makes you love/hate Timbersaw, Timber Chain, which works both as an escape and a great initiation move. Whether you』re getting attacked by three enemies or trying to get the jump on an unsuspecting support, Timber Chain will provide you with plenty of grins and cheers as you jump into the fray.
Aside from his skills, Timbersaw is one of the most colourful personalities in Dota 2, with his incoherent rambling and maniacal outbursts about trees that are sure to provide players with plenty of chuckles.
9. Ogre Magi
There are few things more satisfying than blowing up a hero with a 4x Multicast Fireblast and seeing the obligatory 「omg plz nerf volvo」 response from the dead hero in all chat. Ogre Magi is as dumb as he looks – even with two brains – but where brains fail, brawn and luck reign supreme. There are few supports who are as tanky and have the potential to do as much damage as Ogre Magi.
He is able to withstand more punishment than even some hard carries cannot handle and his skills don』t require too much mana so multiple Fireblast madness can be sustained for a prolong period of time if Ogre is played correctly.
Of course, if you are out of favor with the Dota 2 gods, than there’s a chance that you don』t see many successful Multi Casts. This chance occurence is what makes Ogre Magi such a fun hero to use. He is a complete roll of the dice when it comes to damage, but when things work out in your favor, there is not much an enemy team can do to stop Ogre Magi’s burst damage.
8. Huskar
Huskar is a hero that is hated by any player who is unfortunate enough to lane against him. Huskar is YOLO personified, with his passive Berserker’s Blood, that makes him stronger the less health he has. There are few spells more annoying than Flaming Spears, which cost no mana and stack damage, making him lethal at level one.
Life Break, his ultimate, allows him to become an Olympic long jumper and sacrifice his life force (translation: become overpowered) to deal massive damage to enemies. He is a high risk, high reward carry that can absolutely dominate early game and be a walking terror to anyone unfortunate to cross paths with him. Get Huskar going early and there is very little an opposing team can do against him.
What Huskar has in raw power, he completely lacks in any interesting personality. Here’s a drinking game idea: Take a shot every time Huskar yells 「sacrifice」 or 「I give my life.」 Actually, don』t do that. You』ll just give yourself alcohol poisoning.
7. Invoker
Wearing your collar popped is never cool, unless you happen to be the greatest mage in existence. Is the same old four skill, primary attribute style of Dota way too casual for your superior brainpower?
Try Invoker and his collection of ten spells for maximum magic casting. Invoker is such a fun hero due to his seemingly endless possible combinations of spells, allowing players to be free of the rigid system that most of the heroes use.
Invoker has no permanent role due to the versatility of his spells. Any hero with low health will run back to base in fear of your omnipresent Sunstrike, which can be cast from anywhere on the map. EMP is the single most groan inducing spell as it robs anyone caught in its area of effect of their mana and their will to fight. Summon Familiars gives you the farming potential of many hard carries.
Cast Ghost Walk, Cold Snap and Sunstrike and you』re a ganker with global map presence. Sneaking around not your thing? Tornado combine with EMP and the enemy team will wonder where the hell all of their mana went as they are being taken down by the rest of your team. Invoker is not a welcoming hero with his completely unique skill builds, but when players learn the hero, they will feel like the smartest person alive.
6. Nyx Assassin
Nyxnyxnyxnyx your way to victory with Nyx Assassin’s versatile and endlessly frustrating (for opponents) skill set. Of all the stealth gankers in Dota 2, Nyx Assassin is the most well equipped for complete domination. There are those blasphemous players who say that Nyx can be played as a support hero, but that’s like buying a sports car and living near a school zone.
Not only can Nyx become invisible when he hits level six, but that invisibility comes with sides of bonus movement speed and an attack bonus coming out of stealth. Nyx took a bit of a hit in recent patches with Impale being nerfed, but Nyx is still a great option when you want to rack up the kills. Impale is still a great stun, but now it takes a little more effort to land it. His Mana Burn skill is still a great damage dealer to enemy Intelligence heroes and Spiked Carapace will induce rage as you escape from certain death.
Another great thing about Nyx Assassin is that he does not need that many items to be great. Nyx needs four items: Bottle, Arcane Boots, Dagon, and Ethereal Blade. Once those items are farmed and in the inventory, Nyx Assassin’s damage output is too great for many teams to recover.
5. Clockwerk
With a diminutive stature and a name reminiscent of a techno pop band, it can be easy to look past the tin man battle plan. Don』t let these damning features fool you. Clockwerk is one of the best initiators in Dota 2, capable of catching heroes unaware with the incredible range from his ultimate Hookshot skill and trapping them in his Power Cogs.
What Clockwerk lacks in flashy bloom effects and size, he makes up with utility. A Clockwerk player may not get 20 kills, but he/she will certainly cause the enemy team plenty of grief. In addition to an ultimate that has up to 3000 range (layman terms: really damn far), his Rocket Flare is a great scouting tool that can be shot anywhere on the map and reveals invisible units.
Battery Assault provides much of Clockwerk’s damage and a string of mini stuns preventing heroes with Blink Dagger from escaping Clockwerk’s cogs. Catching an enemy hero off guard with Hookshot will make them more cautious of where they decide to roam freely.
Power Cogs not only traps heroes inside with Clockwerk, but anyone who touches the cogs will be pushed back and lose mana. This allows Clockwerk to create lots of space and counter push when things get hairy.
While his skill are all great and a lot of fun, they can also provide unforeseen challenges for your teammates. Power Cogs, like Earthshaker’s Fissure, can block the path to enemy heroes or trap allies into inescapable death traps. However, with that relative difficulty, casting all of your skills successfully adds to the awesome power of Clockwerk.
4. Axe
In Dota 2, most heroes run when they』re surrounded and taking damage. Axe laughs at those heroes. The big red machine is the very definition of tank, gladly jumping into team fights. For Axe, the more things that are attacking him, the better.
Why is this? Counter Helix. Everything about Counter Helix is awesome, from its signature sound to its attack animation. Counter Helix allows Axe to be extremely aggressive during laning phase, often disrupting enemy farm. It is this skill that makes Axe an absolute nightmare early to mid game, often ending in multiple Culling Blade finishers.
Axe’s other skills are geared toward more Counter Helix, with Berserker’s Call taunting enemy heroes into attacking Axe and Battle Hunger, which forces heroes with the debuff to engage in combat if they want to get rid of its effects.
In addition to his amazing skill set, Axe provides some of the most memorable dialogue in the game, with lines like 「there is no team in Axe」 and 「big words cannot keep you safe from Axe」 to quote a couple examples.
3. Brewmaster
Brewmaster does great at parties. In addition to being a drunk panda bear, Brewmaster moonlights as three elementals in times of great need, like when he’s about to die. Primal Split is arguably the most powerful ultimate ability in Dota 2, giving Brewmaster three unique versions of himself, all with their own set of skills.
Trying to micro with him can be a bit of a pain for newcomers, but Primal Split allows Brewmaster to dominate in team fights. With two different disables and lots of area of effect damage, Primal Split’s spirits can lock down an enemy team with ease and allows Brewmaster to face multiple opponents at once, even when he’s alone. Primal Split is also a great escape mechanism, often giving Brewmaster a kill that would』ve been his own life.
Besides Primal Split, Brewmaster gets a critical hit passive, a great area of effect damaging slow, and another slow that also makes opponents miss. Brewmaster is extremely versatile and can play in any lane and, with the exception of support roles, can be played many different ways.
2. Enigma
Pyrion Flax said it best when he said that Black Hole is the single most exciting spell in Dota 2. This is absolutely true and it is further proven by the fact that Black Hole has the longest cooldown of any skill. A well-executed, perfectly-aimed Black Hole is one of the biggest satisfactions of Dota and will annihilate any chance an enemy team has of winning a team fight and provide a huge morale boost for teammates.
Enigma is not a one trick pony. Demonic Conversion allow him to masterfully harass heroes and take down towers in short periods of time. He can also farm with the best of them, and as a support hero, he is able to buy items quickly, something that a lot of support heroes find difficult to manage. Malefice is a great initiation disable that allows your teammates to gain ground on enemy heroes as they prepare to take them down.
Midnight Pulse kind of gets lost in the chaos of other spells, but that is to the advantage of Enigma. An area of effect damage over time spell, anyone standing on it takes damage every second they stand on it, giving Enigma some much needed damage output.
Enigma is a support hero for people who don』t like to support all of the time and don』t want to suffer from lack of gold.
1. Bristleback
Bristleback is one of the few truly dominant heroes in Dota 2. His skill set provides Bristleback with a skill synergy that will put other heroes to shame, and to death. Quills is a near unavoidable skill that stacks physical damage each time it’s cast, as well as helps build up Bristleback’s passive ultimate, Warpath. It also counts as physical damage, meaning that it goes through magic immunity and can』t be resisted with auras and items. Viscous Nasal Goo is another quick, stackable slow spell that also builds up Warpath.
This combination of spells lets Bristleback chase down and destroy enemy opponents, often able to take on multiple heroes alone successfully. His passive Bristleback also blocks a significant amount of damage, allowing Bristleback to dive towers better than other heroes.
Bristle’s survivability is the highest in the game, often living through situations that will make you shout 「Holy Sh*t I lived!」 as you get a Triple Kill and run away, alive and much richer. Bristleback’s play style allows for some reckless behavior, but most of the time that reckless behavior will often equate into kills, not deaths.
Dota 2’s deep roster of heroes allows for players to have many options when choosing heroes. However, just like in real life, there are those who excel and provide hours of fun and plenty of wins for players. Some of the best heroes are not the flashy, epic looking ones, but the heroes with amazing skills that can provide their team with a big advantage over opponents.
Not all heroes are created equal, and some heroes are objectively better than others. However, like any balanced online game, a hero’s true power lies within the player controlling him/her.
