Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has found himself embroiled in a scandal around the state investment fund, 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
The Wall Street Journal broke the story this week, that Malaysian investigators had traced nearly 700 million US dollars in deposits to accounts allegedly belonging to the prime minister. The country's attorney general confirmed on Saturday that he had received documents from the task force that linked Najib and 1MDB.
According to the Wall Street Journal, those documents show that the two largest deposits, worth 620 million and 61 million US dollars respectively, were transferred to Najib's account in March 2013 during an election campaign. The cash reportedly was sent through a number of companies linked to 1MDB, which was founded by Najib in 2009 to develop new industries. He still acts as chair of the fund's advisory board.
It's the first time Malaysia's leader has faced criminal allegations. Najib has slammed the report as just "wild allegations". On Sunday, he said he'd contacted his lawyers and would decide whether to pursue legal steps in a few days.
He also accused former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad of making up lies about Najib taking money from the state fund. The former leader, who is still highly influential in the country, previously asked Najib to step down over the "disappeared" 1MDB funds in April.
Najib's party, the United Malays National Organisation, has so far stood by their leader. But two opposition parties have called on him to take a leave of absence during the investigation and make public his personal assets.
