Marouane Fellaini has suffered suspected knee ligament damage after being forced off in Belgium’s World Cup qualifier against Bosnia.
Manchester United will not know the full extent of the damage until the midfielder undergoes scans on Sunday - but there are concerns he is set for a prolonged period out of action.
The news will come as a major blow to Jose Mourinho, who is already without Paul Pogba due to a hamstring injury.
Fellaini lasted just 30 minutes of the 4-3 win against Bosnia on Saturday night, with the early prognosis being that he strained the inside of his left knee.
While he was able to leave the ground without the aid of crutches, Belgium manager Roberto Martinez outlined his concern.
「We are all worried about Fellaini,」 he said. 「We fear that there’s ligament damage.」
Fellaini has emerged as a key player for Mourinho since Pogba’s injury.
And with United facing Liverpool in their first game after the international break on October 14, Mourinho will have to rethink his plans.
He already has concerns over leading scorer Romelu Lukaku, who missed Belgium’s game due to an ankle injury.
Fellaini had also been a doubt in the build up to the match after nursing an Achilles injury.
He was eventually cleared to play after returning to training later in the week.
