Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem also announces that Janet Lau of the United People's Party will contest in Pelawan, also as a direct BN candidate.
PETALING JAYA: Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras) President William Mawan Ikom will defend his Pakan state seat as a direct Barisan Nasional candidate.
Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem said this yesterday, and also announced that Janet Lau of the United People’s Party (UPP) would contest in Pelawan, also as a direct BN candidate, a news report in The Star Online said today.
The Pelawan seat is currently held by DAP’s Wong Kee Woan who beat SUPP’s Vincent Goh in the 2011 elections.
Prior to this, the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and its pro-BN splinter party UPP had been jostling for the seat.
Adenan also confirmed that three Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) candidates, Kilat Briak, Rolland Duat and Willie Liau would contest the Krian, Meluan and Ba』 Kelalan seats respectively.
Both Mawan and Lau will have to resign from their respective parties as required, to stand as a direct BN candidate.
Previously, rumours were rife that Mawan, who is also Baram MP would not defend his Pakan seat and instead be appointed to a Federal ministerial post.
On the date of the elections, Adenan said he welcomed the announcement by the Election Commission that April 25 would be nomination day with polling slated for May 7.
