SIBU: The four hostages from Sibu abducted in the waters off Sabah by Abu Sayaff militants are safe.

Mother of youngest hostage 21-year-old Johnny Lau confirmed today (Apr 13) that the father of Wong Teck Kang, another hostage, received a call from his son last night (Apr 12), breaking the silence since the kidnapping on April 2.

She said Teck Kang had told his father, Chee Ming, that the four hostages were safe but their whereabouts were not revealed.

Lau’s mother said they would now leave it to the police and the Malaysian government to work with the authorities in the Philippines to protect the four and bring them home safely.

The other two hostages are Wong Hung Sing and Wong Teck Chii.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun declined to comment on the alleged telephone call received.

As police investigations are still ongoing, Abdul Rashid refused to comment, stating that it could jeopardise the safety of the four hostages.

「When the time is right, I will personally call for a press conference but until then, let us do our job.

「We have to remember that four lives are at stake here,」 he said.

The hostages were grabbed from the MV Massive 6 tugboat by armed masked men on April 2 as they were returning to Tawau after delivering timber cargo to Manila.

Three Myanmar and two Indonesian crewmen were spared by the gunmen.
